Needle LI4, GV14, BL13, LU7 and TE5 with reducing method, retaining the needles for 20 minutes. Moxibustion at GV14 and BL13 is added when the chill is marked.
Common Cold: Wind-Cold Binding the Exterior
Disperse wind, scatter cold, release the lung and the exterior. For marked aversion to cold with mild fever, absence of sweating and a clear nasal discharge.
POINT SELECTION
RATIONALE
LI4 and LU7 release the exterior and open the lung; TE5 expels wind and clears the head; GV14 is the meeting point of all yang channels and dispels cold from the surface; BL13 regulates lung qi. Reducing these points drives the pathogen out through the surface before it can move inward.
SOURCE
Adapted from the song of the four command points and successive dynastic formulas for externally contracted illness
NOTE
These are general formulas recorded in the literature; in clinical use they must be modified according to the individual, the season and the setting. Acupuncture and moxibustion should be performed by a licensed practitioner.
