Health-preserving moxibustion is applied to a small set of points on a seasonal schedule, above all ST36 and CV4, with CV6 and GV4 in some traditions. The classical reasoning is that regular warming of these points supports original qi and prevents the accumulation of cold.
The practice is best known through the Japanese tradition of moxibustion at ST36 in the autumn, which is widely used in home care. In clinical terms the evidence is limited, but the intervention is low-risk when properly supervised, and it is one of the few preventive practices with a continuous history of several centuries.
