Shoulder Bi: Wind-Cold-Damp Obstruction

Dispel wind, scatter cold, resolve damp and stop pain. For aching shoulder with restricted movement, worse in cold weather.

Combined Bi Syndrome

POINT SELECTION

Needle LI15, SI11, LI4 and TE5 with even method, then apply mild-warm moxibustion or warm needling at LI15 and SI11. Active and passive movement of the shoulder follows each session.

RATIONALE

LI15 and SI11 are the local points at the front and back of the joint, and together they cover the two channels that cross the shoulder; LI4 and TE5 act distally to free the channel. Moxibustion is added because cold and damp predominate, and movement after treatment consolidates the effect.

NOTE These are general formulas recorded in the literature; in clinical use they must be modified according to the individual, the season and the setting. Acupuncture and moxibustion should be performed by a licensed practitioner.
